Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known source of Apple-related rumors, claims that Apple is preparing to expand the types of camera sensors it sources for iPhones. Sony now has a stranglehold on providing Apple with camera sensors, but in two years, it seems like that will change.

According to Kuo, Apple will purchase Samsung sensors for the iPhone 18 series, which is anticipated to go on sale in the fall of 2026. In particular, we are discussing the usage of a 48 MP 1/2.6" sensor for ultrawide cameras.

As per Kuo's silence, Samsung has purportedly formed a specialized team to cater to Apple's requirements, and it seems that a deal has already been inked. However, keep in mind that this is only conjecture on our side.

It's unknown how this change would affect the iPhone 18 generation's camera quality in comparison to its predecessors, if at all. There's no need to fear, though, because this is Apple, and we expect the quality to be at least as good as what is now available from Sony sensors.

In other news, the iPhone 18 series will have a 48 MP ultrawide camera with a 1/2.6" Samsung-made sensor. This sensor hasn't been officially released yet, but we'll know it's the one going into the iPhones when Samsung does.
