La Jolla, Meta's rival to Apple Vision Pro, is said to have been abandoned. This was scheduled for release in November of last year after development began in November of the previous year.
That is no longer occurring. The headset's use of MicroOLED screens, which increased its cost far beyond Meta's original budget of under $1,000, is reportedly the cause of the project's cancellation.
Not surprisingly, the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro hasn't exactly been a huge hit either. If Apple can't turn a costly item into a bestseller, then perhaps there isn't a large enough market for two rival high-end headsets.
Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta, commented on the news of the La Jolla headset's cancellation, saying, "We always have a lot of prototypes in development. However, not all of them are put into production by us. We carry some ahead and let go of others. Such decisions are common, and narratives based on rumors about a single action will never present the whole picture.
The high-end headgear may have been shelved, but Meta is still developing the less expensive Quest, dubbed Ventura, which may launch before the year is over. Next month, Meta is anticipated to unveil new augmented reality glasses, while the Quest 4 is anticipated to launch in 2026.
