The Xiaomi SU7 is already on Chinese roads, but those living outside China cannot enjoy the pleasure.
Fortunately, we were able to spend some time with the SU7 Max, experience its powerful twin-motor design, and see how it feels inside.
We went on a date with a Xiaomi SU7 in the Max grade, which is exactly as "romantic, dreamy, and gentle" as Xiaomi describes it on its website. It boasts a 101 kWh battery pack, 495 kW of all-wheel drive, and a gorgeous Radiant Purple color.
While the center console, door handles, bottom section, and steering wheel are all black, the leather seats and Alcantara trimmings on the doors and dash match the panels of the car.
The Xiaomi SU7 Max's inside has a higher quality feel to it than its pricing would indicate. The perforated surfaces and finely embroidered bolsters of the leather seats seem like they belong in a car twice as pricey.
The cabin isn't too made of plastic. Excellent leather stitching is even used for the door knobs.
The SU7 was overengineered by Xiaomi. Not only is there a button instead of the standard pull handle to open the door, but it's a sophisticated technology that might eventually pose some problems. We'll hold off on deciding until we have more time to spend with the vehicle.
Speaking of buttons, we adore those found inside the Xiaomi SU7's body. They all feel fantastic and are of excellent quality at first. Additionally, there are buttons for almost every function you can imagine, so adjusting the temperature controls doesn't require navigating challenging touchscreen menus.
The SU7 Max includes a few neat buttons located directly below the Start/Stop button. These buttons let you adjust the car's air suspension to lower or raise it, and one very fascinating feature is a button that allows you to retract or deploy the spoiler at the back of the vehicle! It automatically modifies its angle of attack based on your speed because it is an active aero component!
The Xiaomi SU7's interior is surprisingly spacious in both the front and rear areas. The feeling of space is further enhanced by the glass roof. Plus, it's cozy inside. We only got to sit behind the wheel of a stationary SU7, so we can't talk about the driving experience (sigh).
We tested the Xiaomi-made phone holder on the left side of the steering wheel, and even the largest phones don't disturb it. It is rather solid.
There will be plenty of room in the car for your belongings. The trunk has a vast underfloor, but the frunk is rather large.
We had the opportunity to examine an SU7 that had been stripped down and its foundations. We had the opportunity to visit Xiaomi's factory (pictures were unfortunately prohibited, so you will just have to trust us on this) and were pleased. Robots transporting components between robot assembly lines and other automated processes make up almost everything. The total number of people at the factory was no more than fifty. We won't pick sides in this debate, although a spokesman joked that Xiaomi's EV plant is more productive than Tesla's Shenzhen facility.
We also had a brief opportunity to drive the vehicle around Xiaomi's makeshift test track. The SU7 Max accelerates violently and painfully in the stomach; it's hard to feel the pace in a video, but trust us when we say that it's a true rocket! The vehicle feels agile and quick, and it corners far better than its weight of almost two tons would indicate.
Inside, it's equally tasteful and serene. You can hardly hear anything even at faster speeds, however the good surface condition may have helped somewhat in that regard.
