Negotiations between Apple and OpenAI are nearing their conclusion, as per an individual with direct knowledge of the situation. The Cupertino, California-based company wants ChatGPT in the next iOS 18 to enhance several of its AI-related capabilities.

The insider claims that both companies are not in a rush to make the official announcement of the agreement just yet. According to earlier reports, Apple and Google are reportedly in discussions about using Google's AI-powered Gemini chatbot. So, the inventors of smartphones may still be looking into other possibilities.

Remarkably, new reports indicate that Apple intends to host the majority of AI functions on its devices, leaving the hard lifting to the on-device silicon, with Apple's data centers handling the remainder. Apple will benefit from this in terms of speed and privacy compared to the competitors.

This might not be possible, though, if Apple and OpenAI reach an agreement.
