Lenovo presented a novel laptop prototype at the 2024 Mobile World Congress trade expo that features a transparent display screen. Known as the ThinkBook Transparent display laptop, it has a virtual keyboard and a 17.3-inch see-through screen.
Augmented reality apps and the ability to view items behind the screen are made possible by the transparent design. The laptop's integrated AI camera can recognize objects positioned behind it and superimpose relevant digital data on the screen.
What is that translucent display exactly? Lenovo claimed to have selected the microLED display for its excellent colour saturation, exceptional contrast ratio, and brightness of up to 1,000 nits. Compared to transparent OLED substitutes, microLEDs offer higher image quality and the possibility of adjusting transparency.
According to the firm, its openness enables it to seamlessly and organically blend into its surroundings. With a compatible pen, the user may easily transition between the keyboard and drawing board, enabling unprecedented levels of creative efficiency.
Lenovo suggests that by drawing real-world landscapes that are visible via the display, architects or artists could profit from the design. There are drawbacks to the futuristic idea. The transparency could be the reason for the panel's 720p resolution. According to Lenovo, future improvements in image quality are possible.
When used with a stylus, a virtual keyboard can also be utilized as a sketching surface. When the stylus gets close, the keyboard vanishes and turns into a flat sketchpad. Lenovo does not intend to release a ThinkBook laptop with a transparent display for sale. A Lenovo representative stated that this laptop is not available outside of the company's test laboratories. It's not the culmination of Lenovo's plans for this form factor.
